Climate Change Ecology
Climate-driven redistribution of biodiversity and shifts in ecosystem structure and functioning pose major challenges for effective policymaking, both at national and international levels. They also create significant pressures for local communities and industries that rely on natural capital.
Building upon solid ecological foundations, we work to deepen the understanding of ecosystem structure, function and dynamics, species interactions, population ecology and community assembly under a changing climate. We apply, refine and develop new protocols for monitoring, reporting and comparing ecological change across ecosystems, habitats and species, and across spatial and temporal scales.
Drawing on open data repositories (e.g. Copernicus, Chelsa) and our extensive expertise in ecological modelling, we assess and project the impacts of climate change through Ecological Niche Models, Climate Vulnerability Assessments and the identification of climate hotspots, helping to inform climate change adaptation plans and programmes.
Alien species reporting, risk assessment and spatial mapping represent an additional priority for Ecosustain, creating a step change in our capacity to inform ecological knowledge by systematically integrating social and economic dimensions.
