Citizen science initiatives
Through a range of projects, we support the active involvement of citizens in environmental research. Building on citizen science initiatives, we develop protocols to ensure data quality (including validation mechanisms), create practical pathways for co-creation of research and innovation with society, and document the impacts of public engagement, comparability and interoperability in science communication.
Working with experts, industry, civil society and management authorities, we build networks of citizen nodes that directly support environmental management.
We also design and deliver targeted training for managers and natural resource users, bringing together the most promising methods, tools, databases and policy insights to strengthen governance and co-management of protected areas.
Indicative Project
Citizen Science & Fisheries Co-management
Project: (2024-2026) “Scientific Suport of actions under the initiative: Highly Protected Mediterranean Initiative”, funded by the Greek Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA) and MedFund.
Under this project we developed and implemented a citizen science program engaging recreational divers in marine biodiversity monitoring within the National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades (NMPANS). Working closely with local diving centers, we designed and deployed two scientifically validated, user-friendly monitoring protocols that enabled trained participants to systematically document fish assemblages, reef-associated species, and indicators of habitat condition during regular guided dives.
The program provided comprehensive support materials, including protocol manuals, species identification guides, and waterproof underwater recording boards. Data were uploaded to a dedicated multilingual online database featuring automated validation, standardized structures, and visualization tools, ensuring quality control and long-term usability. Training combined remote preparation, hands-on field sessions, and continuous seasonal support, empowering diving center personnel to facilitate diver participation.

Under the same project we support the MPA in the identification, selection, and implementation of tools from the FishMPABlue2 toolkit to enhance governance and co-management of small-scale coastal fisheries. An integrated training course combining theoretical components and field-based practical exercises was conducted, focusing on selecting toolkit measures tailored to the park’s ecological, social, and operational characteristics. Comprehensive materials, including guidelines, tutorials, software, datasets, and presentations, were provided to strengthen staff capacity and enable effective implementation of co-management actions.
